NEW DELHI — A devastating fire that tore through a hotel and restaurant complex in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar neighborhood on Wednesday has claimed at least 21 lives, making it one of the deadliest fire tragedies in the national capital in recent years. The incident has triggered a major investigation into potential safety violations and licensing irregularities at the property, as authorities seek answers about how a routine morning turned into a catastrophic loss of life.
The blaze erupted at Flourish Stay B&B, a multi-storey accommodation facility located in the densely populated Hauz Rani area. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of heavy smoke and flames engulfing parts of the building. Firefighters, police officers, disaster management personnel, and medical teams launched a large-scale rescue operation, ultimately evacuating more than 40 people from the smoke-filled structure. Despite those efforts, 21 individuals lost their lives, while several others remain hospitalized with serious injuries.
Among the victims were numerous foreign nationals who had reportedly traveled to Delhi, many for medical treatment at nearby healthcare facilities. Their presence reflects the area’s role as a hub for international medical visitors seeking specialized care. The tragedy has drawn attention both within India and abroad, prompting condolences from government leaders and expressions of grief from affected communities.
As investigators began examining the scene, troubling details emerged regarding the property’s operations. Preliminary findings indicate that the establishment may have been licensed to operate only six guest rooms but was allegedly running as many as 24 or 25 rooms. Authorities are now investigating whether overcrowding, unauthorized modifications, or violations of fire safety requirements contributed to the scale of the disaster.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke rapidly spread through the building. Some occupants reportedly attempted desperate escapes from upper floors while local residents rushed to assist before emergency crews gained full control of the scene. Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze after an extensive operation involving multiple fire engines and rescue teams.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, the tragedy has already reignited concerns about enforcement of building regulations, fire preparedness, and oversight of hospitality establishments operating in densely populated urban neighborhoods. Officials are expected to conduct a comprehensive review of the property’s licensing status, structural conditions, and compliance history as part of the ongoing inquiry.
