Authorities have charged a suspect in connection with a violent home invasion that left Keith and Dianne Blessing seriously injured, following an attack at their rural property near Torrington in northern New South Wales. The couple was later transported to Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

According to police, the incident unfolded shortly after midnight when an intruder allegedly forced entry into the couple’s home while they were asleep. Investigators allege that 34-year-old Joshua Dylan Trethewey attacked the pair with a knife, inflicting severe wounds. Dianne Blessing, 72, suffered a stab wound to the chest, while Keith Blessing, 75, sustained serious abdominal injuries.

Despite his injuries, Keith Blessing reportedly fought back in an effort to protect himself and his wife. Police say he initially used a kitchen knife to defend against the attacker. Authorities allege that after the suspect retreated outside and then attempted to re-enter the residence, Blessing used a legally owned firearm and shot the intruder.

Emergency services responded after a triple-zero call was made from the property. The Blessings were airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital, where they were reported to be in critical but stable condition. The suspect was also hospitalized under police guard after suffering a gunshot wound.

Police have charged Trethewey with two counts of wounding or causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. Investigators said there is currently no indication that the accused knew the victims prior to the attack, and authorities continue to examine what may have motivated the alleged home invasion.

The incident has shocked the close-knit Torrington community, where friends and neighbors have described Keith and Dianne Blessing as kind, generous, and community-minded residents. Tributes and messages of support have poured in as the couple continues their recovery.

Police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that all aspects of the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the use of force in self-defense, will be reviewed as part of the inquiry.
