WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem community is mourning the tragic loss of Thomas James Smith III, 49, who died following a fatal two-vehicle crash on US-52 Northbound near Patterson Avenue.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, officers responded to reports of a collision involving a 2021 Dodge and a 2012 Honda in the northbound lanes of US-52. Preliminary findings indicate that Smith was driving the Dodge northbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a safety barrier. The Dodge then re-entered the roadway and collided with the Honda.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and found Smith unconscious inside his vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Smith later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Honda, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash.

Investigators with the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Authorities have not indicated that speed or impairment has been confirmed as contributing factors, and the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
